Guide to Solving Ethical Problems


One:
Understand the type of situation.

Two:
Get all the facts involved.

Three:
Identify possible options.

Four:
Ask the six simple ethical questions:
Is it right?
Is it legal?
Does it hurt anyone?
Can the decision be reported on the front page of the daily newspaper or TV?
Would you counsel your child similarly?
How does it smell, i.e., your gut reaction?

Five:
Make the decision.

Six:
Evaluate adequacy of moral/ethical reasoning:
Is it logical?
Is it accurate, relevent, complete?
Is it consistant?
Can decision be applied to you as well?

Seven:
Take action.
